Frequently Asked Questions

For whom is this book written?

This book is not written for someone studying piano for the first time. Nor is this written for those largely-satisfied players who prefer to play at the level they now accept and enjoy. Rather, it is written for the practicing pianist – amateur, professional, student or teacher – who yearns to play with greater physical freedom, tonal variety, dramatic intensity, and ultimately meaning.

Book or video?

Although the benefits of digital learning are obvious, book form lets us work at our own speed, locate passages, mark up, try out, and return to helpful ideas. No need to wait for the presenter to address our issues.  (That said, video demonstrations might well follow its publishing – life moves on).

You can download the book in its entirety or by chapter. The page numbering remains consistent so the Index applies to both of them.

What is the form of the book?

Imagine spending a year in a fine European Conservatory. The lectures are taught by a Faculty filled with those talented, eccentric, passionate teachers that we find in Conservatories all over the world. At the end of each class, students will be given a Handout including quotations by great pianists,  suggestive images, titled bullets,  and a brief 3-sentence Takeaway.

Because everyone learns differently, this book uniquely combines narration with how-to instructions. These are written in different fonts for easy navigation. While some readers will read the book straight through, others will prefer to zoom in on their specific issues as listed in the opening Table of Contents or concluding Index.

What will I learn and how might I use it?

In these pages, you will find principles to intensify a climax, mystify a pianissimo, spiritualize a slow movement, or rage without tension. So, go ahead! Let this book follow the rhythm of your practicing. Refine your issues, highlight the points that best ‘speak’ to you, and start there. You can always go back and pick up the rest.

This book covers pretty well every aspect of piano playing. Download the whole book or open just the Chapters that interest you now.

How do I get the book?

Simple! Just download the book for free in its entirety, or by chapters as outlined on this site. I welcome and encourage questions, impressions, revelations, or community sharing. The best things in life can be free. My gift to fellow pianists.
